It’s Time for the Final Fight for the Bight.

The Great Australian Bight and Nullarbor are closer than ever to securing UNESCO World Heritage status — but decision-makers need to hear from us right now. This coastline has inspired thousands of surfers and ocean lovers to rise up against Big Oil, and today we’ve got a chance to lock in permanent protection.

The Bight is one of the wildest places on Earth: 1,160 km of rugged coastline, home to whales, sea lions and species found nowhere else. With all oil and gas leases now expired, we have a rare window to take the Bight off the fossil fuel menu forever.

Email the Federal Minister for the Environment and Water, Murray Watt, along with Lucy Hood (SA Minister for Climate, Environment and Water) and Matthew Swinbourn (WA Minister for Environment, Community Services and Homelessness) today and urge them to support World Heritage listing. Dear Minister,

As a supporter of Surfers for Climate’s Final Fight for the Bight Campaign, I am writing to seek your support for advancing UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Nullarbor and the Great Australian Bight.

This region is globally unique being home to remarkable biodiversity, with around 85% of its marine species found nowhere else on Earth. It is also a place of deep cultural and spiritual significance for First Nations custodians, including the Mirning People, who have cared for these lands and waters for countless generations.

We have a rare window of opportunity to secure long-term protection for this extraordinary coastline. With growing recognition of its environmental, cultural, and community value, there is a clear pathway for South Australia and Western Australia - working with the Federal Government - to pursue World Heritage listing that reflects and safeguards what makes this region so significant. Such recognition would support stronger management, celebrate its global importance, and deliver lasting benefits for communities, culture, and country.

This moment also provides an opportunity for both State and Federal Government’s to demonstrate their commitment to protecting Australia’s most iconic landscapes and seascapes, and to show leadership internationally.

I urge you to publicly endorse the pursuit of UNESCO World Heritage listing and to champion this initiative within your government, ensuring the Nullarbor and the Great Australian Bight receive the recognition and protection they deserve.
