UPDATE: After a week of Baywatch-style action and making noise, we’ve got epic news. Beachwatch funding has been saved!

The NSW Government has ditched the plan to shift costs onto coastal councils - thanks to people power and salty activism from legends like you. That means ongoing water quality testing at 94 swim spots across Sydney, including our beloved beaches, rivers, and new inner-west swim hubs.

The NSW Government has ditched the plan to shift costs onto coastal councils - thanks to people power and salty activism from legends like you. That means ongoing water quality testing at 94 swim spots across Sydney, including our beloved beaches, rivers, and new inner-west swim hubs.

This is what happens when we show up and fight for the places we love. The water’s safer, the data’s flowing, and the surf community just scored a solid win for climate and coastal care.

At Surfers for Climate, we’re all about protecting what we love. That means clean waves, healthy oceans, and beach days without mystery rashes. Whether you surf, swim, paddle or just frolic in the shallows, you deserve water that’s free from sewage and sketchy surprises.

But the NSW Government is considering cutting funding for Beachwatch, the program that monitors water quality and gives us vital information on our beaches. Without it, we could all be paddling through pollution without a clue. We can’t let that happen.

We need Beachwatch to protect our surfs, our swims, and our health. Help us make noise by telling NSW Environment Minister Penny Sharpe: #SaveBeachwatch

Surfers for Climate’s Call to Action:

  • Fully fund Beachwatch in the 2025/26 NSW State Budget and ensure its long-term sustainability.
  • Expand the program’s monitoring capacity to reflect increased pollution risk due to climate change.
  • Promote the service to raise awareness of its public health value across all communities in NSW.
